Supporting the London Children’s Museum

Community Support - cheque giving etc.

A team from the Kiwanis Club of Forest City-London presented a cheque this week to London Children’s Museum for the amount of $3,000.00. The Club pledged the funds prior to December 31, 2023, which qualified them for a matching opportunity that doubled the original donation to $6,000.00. For 45 years, the London Children’s Museum has changed the lives of children, each and every day. Our Club is proud to support the Children’s Museum as they prepare for their exciting move to 100 Kellogg Lane.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Kiwanis Club of Forest City-London for achieving the award of “Distinguished Club” for the 2022/2023 year! This award is presented to clubs which have excelled throughout that year in community projects, donations, membership growth and leadership. Congratulations to Immediate Past President Rosalyn Fast, the entire leadership team as well as all of our club members on this honour. Our club will be presented with the Distinguished Award at the upcoming Kiwanis EC&C district convention in Montego Bay. We’re looking forward to another successful year serving our London community!

Donation to the London Children’s Connection

Helping the London Children’s Connection Support Over 250 Children! On Wednesday morning, November 22, Sue and Jim Garey visited the London Children’s Connection on behalf of the Kiwanis Young Children Priority One Committee. They presented Program Manager Julie Keens a cheque in the amount of $1,062.50 in support of their Community Home Child Care program. London Children’s Connection provides nurturing small group child care in safe, approved homes of carefully selected caregivers across London and Middlesex County. Our donation will be directed to children aged 0-5, and will be used to enhance the learning environments of over 60 licensed home child care programs, supporting more than 250 children. Ron Gosbee is a non-Indigenous survivor of one of Canada’s most notorious residential schools, St. Anne’s Indian Residential School in Fort Albany, Ontario.

On November 16th, 2023, we we were proud to host Ron as the final speaker in our “Headliners Speaker Series.” Ron shared his personal experience of the violence and injustice he witnessed while attending St. Anne’s Indian Residential School.

Kiwanis/Staples School Supply Drive

Every year, the Forest City London Kiwanis club joins forces with Staples to bring much needed backpacks and school supplies to students in need here in London with it’s School Supply Drive. The drive begins in August with customers making donations at Staples as they check out. For the past few years, we have partnered with the Staples store at Wellington Rd./Baseline. Staples then partners with the Thames Valley Education Foundation. The TVEF has a great pulse on the specific needs of elementary and secondary school students in the City of London. Using funds collected from the campaign from the previous year, TVEF purchased backpacks and back-to-school supplies, then filled the backpacks during July and August. Volunteers from Kiwanis and Staples assisted in the assembly and distribution. The supplies were then ready for students in need once the school year began. This year’s donation totaled just under $4200! Thank you to Staples and the TVEF for helping kids in our neighbourhood!

Remembrance Day Observation and Guests: The Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre November 6th was our annual Remembrance Day observance, led by Les Files and Jim Garey. It was a moving tribute to all those that served and the many that did not get to return to their loved ones – both past and present. Also joining us were Chelsea Cameron, Operations Manager at GCCRC and Jazz Walmsley, who is the Team Lead for their Good Food Project.
